Our new doc is awsome! Our old ped retired so we had to find yet another doctor but we got very lucky. He loves Owen and is willing to learn about his condition.
2 Year stats:
Height: 30 inches tall(yes tall, I can say that if I want!)
Weight: 25 lbs
Head Circumference: 52.5 cm
And for comparison's sake...
17 month stats:
Height: 28 3/4 inches (that 3/4th is very important!)
Weight: 22.5 lbs
Head Cirumference: 52.5 cm
You know, what's funny is that I don't keep a baby book. I tried to but I'm not really the scrap booking sort. This blog has become the only record for recording Owen's milestones so when I had to look up his last measurements, I had to look up the correct post. I just thought that was kind of funny.
Poor Owen! The only memories of his childhood are a jar full of hair from his first cut and a poorly updated blog that is shared with the world. I'll start saving for therapy right now.
Anyways, so what his measurements show me is that his growth is slowing a bit and his weight is not. His doctor plotted him on the AH charts and he mentioned that his weight had spiked. On that note, Owen will be starting the Master Cleanse next week. Lemonade and Cayenne pepper ONLY! Hahah just kidding...maybe for mom though....
His head. It hasn't grown at all. Not one centimeter. I honestly don't know if that is good or bad. My immediate reaction was that it was good, but now I'm not so sure. Does his head have room for all those brains? It just went to show me how little I know about human anatomy and specifically as it pertains to Owen's condition.
You know, I honestly don't know why LP's with achondroplasia have bigger heads? I thought it was because of their small foramen magnum and the excess fluid that gets trapped. But Owen's foramen magnum is getting smaller but his head isn't getting bigger. I feel like a loser for not understanding this. But no one has ever outright explained it. Anyone? Tonya?
Anyway....here are the plots. Notice that despite the doctors assesment that his weight has spiked on the chart, he is actually plotting slightly below where he was on the height/weight chart.
Oh! PS - I missed the cut off for sending Owen's picture into Regis and Kelly! Thanks for all the input but Owen's cuteness will have to be contained to just our little blogging world for now! We will conquer the world next year!

Yah for a good appointment! And don't feel bad about the no baby book thing...Laynie's is maybe 1/3 filled out. Riley's had her name and a few pages, and Peyton's has her name. They'll all make it just fine!
It's great that you like your new pediatrician, we love ours and I can't imagine having to find a new one.
Hi Cat. Looks like Owen is doing great. As I've been studying the bone structure for Achon, I've noticed that they actually have much more bone (thicker skull plates) than AH kids. This could be part of the reason...and of course, in Bryan's case he has much more fluid in his ventricles than most kids. We are waiting on a second opinion from Dr. Pauli right now as Bryan has been recommened for a shunt, which is why I have been studying so much. Owen gets cuter by the day...I love that Buda Belly...but it sounds like you may have to cut back on the ice cream...:0(

I am glad the appointment went well and you like your new doctor. It's so important to have a doctor you like and trust!
One of the things that Dr Pauli explained to us, which if I remember correctly was when he was explaining the reasoning for the larger head was this:
The bones that are effected by achondroplasia are the cartilaginous bones. Only about half of the bones in the head are cartilaginous and the rest grow typically.
There must be more to it than that, like the extra fluid from the smaller Foramen Magnum, but that's all I remember. Hopefully that will help start to answer your question.

Yeah for a good well baby check! No worries about the baby book ... I think with atll the technology now they are a thing of the past. mine has a few notes stuffed in it. My Mom kept bugging me about filling out the baby book during Caden's first few months of life .... then I found the blogging world. A blog serves as a great baby book :0)

Cole and Owen are the same size! How cool is that?! At Cole's 18 month he was 30 1/4" (I agree that 1/4 is important) and his weight was 24 lbs...and ummm..Cole's head is probably way bigger..I don't remember that one. I do feel like the growing is slowing (hehe). Owen is just so cute..I was really hoping he would win!
Yay for a good appointment and finding a doctor who is willing to learn! Baby books are hard to keep up to date anyways, so don't feel bad! I once went a whole year without putting anything into my older two girls books!
He sounds like he is doing great. I worry about Preston's weight. He is up to between 31-32 Lbs. I am watching what he eats and he is super active but what can you do when half your leg has not grown? Poor dude. Got to love the budda bellies.

One of my reasons for starting a blog was because I had barely written anything in Simon's baby book his first year. So, I figure at least I'll some memories written somewhere for him. :)
