The Big Boy Bed

We have had our share of sleep problems with Owen over the past few months.  When Owen wasn’t feeling well a while back, we let him sleep with us.  I know, I know.   I can hear you all groaning and judging me!  I now realize that I made a total rookie parenting mistake.  One that I have been paying for by the way.  As you have probably guessed….Owen has been sleeping with us for about 2 months straight now.

There was a lot of laziness on Dan and I’s part.  At first we were able to get him to bed in his crib, then he would wake up in the middle of the night crying.  It was so much easier to just bring him in to bed with us (clearly what Owen wanted) than to stay up and struggle to get him back to sleep.   On top of that, we liked being able to cuddle him at night, something he doesn’t really allow us to do during waking hours (he does have a reputation to uphold).

Over the course of his mommy and daddy bed vacation, he started becoming not so fun to sleep with.  He kicks!  Dan and I would wake up in our king  sized bed each on the far edges with Owen sprawled out in the middle.  The last straw was when a rogue toenail left Dan’s back a mess.  I haven’t seen Dan’s back that scratched up since…well…um…I suppose that’s not appropriate….Moving on!

Anyways, we figured a big boy bed may help our plight although we had managed to get Owen into his crib for 3 nights previously. We decided on a toddler bed vs. moving right to a twin just for the transition factor.  Plus the smaller bed means Owen can get in and out all by himself without a stool.  The bed was only $60 at Wal-Mart and uses his crib mattress so we can still keep all his sheets and bedding for now.  One drawback – we just realized that it carries a max weight of 50 lbs. Ooops! I laid in it with him last night to help him get to sleep.  You’d think they’d account for that huh?

Owen’s first night was last night and HE FELL OUT!  I felt so bad!  We didn’t even think to put pillows on the ground because we thought the rails would stop him!.  It’s worth mentioning that I have hardwood floors.  Poor kid! Now come to think of it, I guess he’s used to sleeping on a huge bed with 5 and half foot human guard rails so maybe it’s not that big of a surprise.

I think a toddler bed is so perfect for our LP kids. I still have Sam's old toddler bed and I will for sure use it with Anaïs.
He looks pretty happy in it though. :)

I've had Liz in a toddler bed until...well, just about now and she'll be five in a few weeks. The toddler bed is just perfect for the little kids. He must really roll a lot in the night. He looks grown up - like a mature little kid. : )

We've got Caty in a toddler bed too and it's just perfect for her. I can't even imagine what she would look like in a twin! Eventually, but for now, the toddler is just the right size. He looks so cute in the bed with his Curious George - hope we manages to stay in! Might want to think about an additional rail to help with that.

I can hardly handle the cuteness of him in his bed!! So adorable!
Laynie slept in our bed for a looonnng time...we actually first got her out by putting a tv in her room (talk about rookie parenting mistakes!) then she gradually started coming in again in the middle of the night...it was just easier to let her. Finally, a little over a year ago Riley was waking up every night and crying and refusing to go back to sleep...laynie meanwhile was in our room...our solution? We had them share a room. It actually worked...we've been kid-free in our room since and riley still gets up but now only for potty or drinks...

And yes, our girls have fallen out of the beds, even with rails. Laynie fell out in a hotel once on the hard floor...I felt so awful! the good news is once they do it one time, they usually don't repeat it!

Hopefully your nights sleep improve, especially now that you are knocked up - you need your rest!

Owen looks so cute in the 'big' bed! I would love something like that, but I am not sure if we can get them like that here? Hope you start getting some better sleep soon.

Owen looks adorable in his new bed next to Curious George. I just sort of skiped to the chase (no pun intended) and went straight from crib to twin size bed with the huge guard rail. At age 4 we just got rid of the rail. It worked very well for us.

Ok so you always make me laugh! Thank you for that. As for fallin gout-Pres fell out a few times at first (I did not have rails) and once like a year later-I actually kind of laughed when he did it since he had been sleeping in a bed for a long time. He thought it was kind of funny too. His crib converted into the toddler bed so that made life easy. Owen looks so adorable in his pjs with his Curious George. For some reason Preston is deathly afraid of that Curious George-he brought it in my parents' room and it never came back. We must talk about him not being such a wuss Just kidding! Hope you are feeling well!

What a cutie in the new bed!!!!! ****HORRIBLE PARENT ALERT**** Taylor and Trace STILL both sleep with us! It is getting waaaaay past time to do something about it! Trace sleeps sideways and takes up like 32" of the king bed, leaving Taylor pushed against the bed rail, John teetering on the edge, and me pinned between two children! Maybe I should take Danielle's advice and move them in together. Hope Owen sleeps well in his new bed, and learns not to fall out!

Owen is adorable in his new big boy bed with his Curious George! The toddler bed looks perfect for him! We are getting a toddler bed for Simon from a cousin in a few weeks, and we have the same thing to consider - him rolling out onto the hardwood floors.

I love Owen's new big boy bed ... so cute! We too have been having our fair share of sleep struggles with Caden this last week and a half... after talking to someone at work today, I'm thinking it may be his two year molars that are keeping him up?! we have a checkup tomorrow so I will ask the doc to stick her tongue depressor in and take a look ... no way am I stinking my finger it that mouth :0)
Hopefully Owen stays in his bed ... and doesn't keep falling out :0( I love your comment about the five ft human bumpers :0)

Yay for Owen getting his own bed! I know all too well about co-sleeping and transition time to their own beds! Sonya co-slept with me until she was 13 months! Ian works 3rd shift so it really wasn't an issue until she became a kicker too! It's amazing how mobile kids can be in their sleep! It gets easier so hang in there! He is just too cute chillin in his big boy bed! :)

YEAH for the Big Boy bed Owen!! Agh, if falling out of bed is the worst he does, your doing good!! Knoah loves his toddler bed, I think they have the same one!!

Ellie fell out of her toddler bed, too, despite the guardrails. She doesn't sleep there now, though.... Owen is so cute in his new bed!!! Now, maybe mommy and daddy can get some real sleep! :)
(your comment about Dan's back cracked me UP!!!)
